What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Made from materials like porcelain, metal, resin, or ceramics, crowns encase the visible portion of the tooth above the gum line. They are used to protect weak teeth from breaking, restore broken or severely worn teeth, cover and support teeth with large fillings, hold dental bridges in place, cover misshaped or discolored teeth, and complete dental implants.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist examines and prepares the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. This may involve filing down the tooth or building it up if there is significant damage. Of course, your tooth will be numbed completely before beginning this process. After reshaping, an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth is taken to create a model for the crown.

The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is custom-made, which can take a couple of weeks. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. However, it’s worth noting that we also offer CEREC same-day dental crowns, which allows us to mill dental crowns in office; if you use this method, your restoration will be done in a single appointment.

Once the final restoration is complete, we’ll remove the temporary crown (if necessary) and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. Adjustments are made as necessary before the crown is cemented in place. Once secured, we ensure your bite is correct and provide care instructions to help you maintain the crown.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Someone with a nice smile

Dental crowns offer several benefits. They strengthen and protect damaged or decayed teeth, preventing further deterioration and the need for extraction. Crowns restore the tooth's shape, size, and function, improving chewing and speaking. They also enhance the tooth's appearance, providing a natural look and matching the color of surrounding teeth. Crowns can hold dental bridges in place, cover dental implants, and support teeth with large fillings. They are durable and long-lasting, with proper care, and can significantly improve oral health and overall confidence by restoring a healthy, attractive smile.
